Master the Art of Salting a Cocktail Glass in 6 Simple Steps

Salting a cocktail glass is a common technique used to enhance the flavour of certain drinks, most commonly used in Margaritas. It adds a savory element to the cocktail as well as enhancing the look of the cocktail.

Keep in mind that not all cocktails are improved by a salted rim, so use this technique selectively based on the drink you're preparing and your personal preference. A classic Gin Cocktail that has a salted rim is the Salty Dog (Cousin of the Greyhound).

Here's a simple step-by-step guide on how to salt a cocktail glass:

What you will need:

  • Cocktail glass
  • Plate
  • Lime or lemon wedge
  • Salt (preferably coarse salt or kosher salt)

Instructions:
Select an appropriate glass for the cocktail you're making. Margarita glasses or glasses with a wide rim are usually used for salted rim cocktails.

  1. Prepare the Plate: Pour a small amount of salt onto a flat plate. Spread it out evenly to create a surface that's wider than the rim of the glass.
  2. Moisten the Glass Rim: Take a lime or lemon wedge and run it along the outer rim of the glass. Ensure the entire rim is moistened but not dripping.
  3. Dip the Glass: Invert the glass and dip the moistened rim into the salt on the plate. Rotate the glass to ensure an even coating of salt on the rim.
  4. Tap Off Excess Salt: Gently tap the glass on the side to remove any excess salt. You want an even layer adhering to the moistened rim.
  5. Let it Set: Allow the salted rim to set for a moment before adding the cocktail. This gives the moisture a chance to bond with the salt, ensuring it sticks to the glass.
  6. Pour the Cocktail: Proceed to pour your cocktail into the prepared glass. The salted rim will add a savory kick to each sip.
